44The Allegheny River, named 2024 PA River of the Year by PA DCNR, flows free from Kinzua Dam east of Warren, PA to Emlenton at the southern %u019fp of Venango County. The 107-mile sec%u019fon comprises the Allegheny Wild and Scenic River Water Trail, a recrea%u019fonal corridor for wildlife observa%u019fon, fishing, paddling, and jet boa%u019fng on a moderate-flow riffle-and-pool river. The Oil Heritage sec%u019fon extends from the launch at Tionesta to Emlenton. Overnight float trips are popular with primi%u019fve camping available at Franklin, Oil City, and Emlenton. Inexperienced paddlers should avoid the Class III rapids in Oil City by portaging river right. All per%u019fnent informa%u019fon on access and camping can be found online at FishAndBoat.com/Watertrails.Franklin%u2019s public boat ramp with parking is at the corner of Elk and Third streets. A kayak and canoe access is at the Franklin Trailhead near the Eighth Street Bridge on Route 322. The Oil City Marina, located at the corner of Wyllis and West Front streets, has a public boat ramp, picnic tables, and parking. There%u2019s also an access point for small watercra%u014c at Oil Creek Memorial Landing located just north of the business district on Route 8 in Oil City. Public parking is available.WATER TRAILSSteeped in geological and historical significance, French Creek is recognized as the most biologically diverse stream of its size in Pennsylvania. The French Creek Water Trail extends from Union City Dam tailrace to the confluence with the Allegheny River at Franklin, providing an incredible paddle sport resource. The final 14 miles flow through the Oil Region; a comfortable one-day float and fish trip is from the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy Access at U%u019fca to Riverfront Park in Franklin. In 2017 Oil Creek was officially named a PA Water Trail. O%u014cen too low to be dependable for kayaking, it%u2019s best known for fly fishing and as an excellent spot to see bald eagles and herons.PA Fish & Boat Commission access areas require registra%u019fon and/or a launch permit for all watercra%u014c including unpowered.
